HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) is pleased to announce state grants were awarded to schools in Butler and Lawrence counties that will help upgrade their facilities to continue to provide critical food serves to students.

The grants were awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). The department awarded more than $2.7 million in competitive grants to 130 elementary, middle and high schools across the state for the purchase of new food service equipment for cafeterias.

Schools receiving funding locally include:

   • Broad Street Elementary School (Butler Area School District) - $10,394 to be used for an electric convection oven.
   • McQuistion Elementary School (Butler Area School District) - $10,394 for an electric convection oven.
   • Mohawk Area Senior High School (Mohawk Area School District) - $15,334 to be used for a reach-in refrigerator/freezer.
   • Mohawk Area Elementary School (Mohawk Area School District) - $1,759 for a mixer.

“Purchases made with this funding have helped schools improve nutritional quality and variety, entice more students to eat school meals and operate more efficiently and cost-effectively,” said Bernstine. “Access to kitchen upgrades from these grants allows schools to better support children’s health and to run financially sound meal programs.”

Funding for the grants is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Grants are awarded to schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.
